Staying Hydrated in the Arizona Heat

Life in Arizona includes a wide variety of landscapes, activity, and elevations. One thing you can be sure of, however, no matter where you are in Az, is the sun. In warmer months and lower elevations, it is important to keep yourself hydrated. Visitors to the state often underestimate how quickly the Arizona heat can wick moisture from their bodies.

One way to assist in keeping your body hydrated is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Not only do they contain vitamins and nutrients that are good for you, but they have a high water content which your body needs in such an environment.

Scheduling your outdoor work and activities to the morning hours will reduce the likelihood of the heat draining you of much-needed moisture. As the sun climbs in the sky, and temperatures rise, your skin will give off moisture at an increasing rate.

If you do go out during the mid-day hours, it helps to dress in lightweight, light colored clothing that covers your limbs. This will reduce the rate of evaporation as well as protect your skin from direct contact with the sun’s rays.
